Breast Surgery.
As a symbol of femininity and quintessential female sexual trait, breasts have elicited concern and admiration from women and men alike throughout the history of humankind.
Their beauty and harmony are linked to feelings of self-confidence and security in interpersonal relationships, sex life, psychological issues and maternity. Women attach great importance to their breasts, with concern over external appearance (shape, size, fullness, the specific features of the areola and nipple) and breastfeeding capacity, and attend regular medical examinations to ensure their health.
Changes in Breasts over Time
The shape and size of breasts, as well as the fullness of the areola and nipple, change over the course of a woman's life for a variety of reasons, such as the onset or ebbing of hormones, weight gain or loss, maternity and breastfeeding. All of this is directly influenced by genetic heredity. Typically, adolescents have small, round breasts, whose areolas and nipples lie in the fourth intercostal space.
As a result of the aforementioned factors, the mammary gland may be large (gigantomastia), small (hypomastia), absent or underdeveloped (amastia) or excessively developed (mammary hypertrophy).
Pregnancies and breastfeeding bring an increase in breast size that is lost at the end of these periods (mammary atrophy). Likewise, breasts can 'droop' (ptosis).
During menopause, glandular tissue is almost entirely replaced by fat tissue. The breast may increase or decrease dramatically in volume, accompanied by mammary ptosis.
The skin of the breasts may also undergo changes in different stages of life. In young women, it is elastic, firm, tense. In mature women, this elasticity decreases and the skin relaxes and loses firmness, thereby contributing to the ptosis of the breasts.
Reconstructive and cosmetic plastic surgery offers the option to enhance and recover the breasts' aesthetic attributes, always aiming to close the gap between each woman's desires and the actual surgical possibilities.
The plastic surgery specialist knows best how to interpret and apply these desires, based on a prior dialogue, during which he or she will be able to clarify any doubts regarding the surgery and postoperative care.
